Papers, 1795-1936.

Papers of members of the Fox family of Mass. The bulk of the collection is comprised of the papers of Rev. Thomas B. Fox, minister of the First Religious Society of Newburyport (1831-45) and the Indiana St. Congregational Church (Unitarian) in Boston (1845-55). His papers include sermons, lectures, essays written as a student at Harvard (1824-28), preaching journals (1829-69, 1831-50), and a scrapbook of his newspaper articles. The papers of three of Fox's sons document their service in the Civil War. Charles B. Fox's journal and letterbook cover his service with the Mass. 13th (1861-May 1863) and 55th Infantry Regiments (June 1863-1865), the latter unit comprised of Black soldiers. Papers of John A. Fox include typescripts of letters written home as a member of the Mass. 2nd Infantry Regiment and a register kept as a secretary of the unit's veterans' organization. Papers of Thomas B. Fox, Jr. include Harvard assignments (1860) and typescripts of letters to his family from 1862-63, also as a member of the Mass. 2nd Infantry. The collection also includes nine vols. of sermons (1795-1847) preached by Rev. John Pierce, Thomas B. Fox's father-in-law, as pastor of the First Church in Brookline. Other family members represented include George W. Fox (including his diary kept as secretary of the American Unitarian Association, 1852-54), George B. Fox, and Thomas A. Fox.
